Catalogue published on the occasion of the Cy Twombly exhibition at the Collection Lambert in Avignon, from 4 June to 30 September 2007.
Both a painter and a sculptor, Cy Twombly invented a universe unlike any other, where painting blends with writing, where references to poetry, history and ancient literature are always intertwined with the momentum of the gesture. Acclaimed by American, British, German and Swiss museums, he remains relatively little known in France. The exhibition in Avignon is set to be a landmark event: it is the first time that the artist has created a series specifically for a French museum. Cy Twombly visited Avignon and then returned to Italy to paint, taking into account the museum's spaces and the unique light of Provence. The catalogue reveals these new works in the place for which they were created, accompanied by sculptures and drawings.
